About

Michael Shores

I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and I am blessed to have been the (neglected) child born between an older sister and a younger brother in a “Leave It To Beaver” kind of household. And being the middle child, of course I never got to watch my favorite TV shows. But mother’s “designer homemade cakes” helped dispel my theory of neglect, along with daddy’s love of collecting unusual or antique “stuff” that he and I enjoyed together in the basement on a routine basis. Our man-cave time together still brings pleasant memories of a man taken from us much too soon, at just 50 years of age.

I consider myself a true southerner. Just ask me what part of Atlanta I’m from; I mean the real Atlanta. I was born between Peachtree and West Peachtree Streets, at Crawford W. Long Hospital, just 3 blocks away from where the now famous Varsity hotdog stand began. When I visit my birthplace once or twice a year, I make a point to drop in at the original downtown Varsity for a hotdog and an orange frosty. The sound of the order-takers continually asking, “What’ll ya’ have? What’ll ya’ have? invites special memories of good times with family and friends.

Education and Career

After high school in Atlanta and then college at Embry Riddle Aeronautical Institute in Daytona Beach, Florida, I became an A&P Rotorcraft Mechanic and later, a helicopter pilot for the Jacksonville – Florida Mosquito Control. I enjoyed working in a job that resulted in something different every day, and I learned to have fun with nature while flying at the unusually low altitudes required for aerial spraying of large populations of mosquitoes. When I thought I might go undetected, I’d fly with the birds (chase them). My wife, Nancy, still has a problem with that. And flying under tall bridges was fun, too, except someone was watching that time. Ok, I didn’t do it again.

My next adventure on the career train was an Assistant Director’s position in Gainesville, Florida. We had a great time building a mosquito control program there, and Nancy loved the college town environment. Lakes and fresh water springs were abundant within a 50 mile radius, so weekends were spent snorkeling or water skiing.

In 1975 we moved to Amelia Island, where I would enjoy 18 years as the Director of the Amelia Island Mosquito Control District, along with raising three amazing sons. Our little town, Fernandina Beach, on Amelia Island truly was a great place for family life.

Massage and Holistic Medicine

But after retirement from my blue collar duties, boredom set in and eventually dictated something very different for me on the horizon. Nancy had mentioned to me several times through the years that my foot massages were very relaxing and she thought my hands seemed to sense where tension accumulated and what her feet needed (kneaded).
So, off to massage therapy school I went. After graduating from The Atlantic Academy of Massage Therapy in Jacksonville, Florida, I began to enjoy my new career as a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in both Florida and Georgia and national certification as well. I’ve enjoyed working for the Ritz-Carlton, The Amelia Island Plantation (Omni), local Bed and Breakfast Inns, and personal residences.

My interests beyond traditional Swedish massage include: Ashiatsu, Rossiter Technique, Primal Release, Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT), Electro-Therapy Point Stimulation (ETPS), and many east-meets-west therapies. I hope to continually learn and travel to China or Thailand to study more about ancient theories and techniques, and someday open a comprehensive holistic medicine day spa.

The birth of Amelia Massage Associates, Inc. in 1994 was a dream-come-true vision for me and Nancy and we both appreciate the opportunity to serve our community and visitors from all over the world.

Nancy Shores

Born in Petersburg, Virginia and adopted at birth by John and Mildred Clay, a construction worker and a nurse who could not conceive children of “their own,” I feel blessed as I reflect on my heritage and heart-warming childhood memories. Strongly influenced from my birth to her death in 1971, my grandmother and namesake, Nancy, remains vivid in my heart, mind, and soul. Early childhood memories include “Granny” referring to me and my biological sister, Claire, as “chosen girls.” And she often told me that I was a “giver.” I think this was the beginning of my desire to make those around me feel special, no matter what.

After marriage to Michael and the subsequent births of our 3 happy, healthy sons, my desire to work directly with others in a healing environment led me to careers in medical laboratory technology and medical laboratory sales and services. In 1999 I graduated from massage therapy school in Jacksonville, Florida and earned massage therapist licenses in Florida (LMT) and Georgia and attained national certification (NCBTMB).

On one hand (pun intended), it seems like just yesterday that I became a massage therapist, yet on the other hand, I feel like I’ve been a therapist forever. I have learned that all the other hats I’ve worn along the way were in preparation for my work with folks from all over the world and from all walks of life.

And what better place to call home? To live and work in the peaceful barrier island paradise called Amelia Island, a north east coastal Florida setting – an escape to rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.

As a long-term sand-in-my-toes Floridian, wife, mother, grandmother, water sports enthusiast, music lover, black lab lover, and co-founder of Amelia Massage Associates, I welcome any opportunity to give back through healing touch, a rewarding purpose and my lifetime mission.

Danielle Rohrbaugh

I am a native of Amelia Island and have always enjoyed the easy going lifestyle that our little piece of paradise offers. I am blessed to have accomplished my life-long dream of becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist and practicing my passion right here at home.

Early on, at the age of thirteen, I realized the many healthy benefits of therapeutic bodywork and natural healing therapies ‘first hand.’ I saw many positive outcomes after treating my family members and then began a journey of self-study and research. I didn’t know it then, but I think this was the real beginning of my  “massage school.”

Deep Tissue massage is my true calling, but I also enjoy providing Swedish/Relaxation, Pre-Natal, Reflexology, and Aromatherapy modalities. My love of Deep Tissue work has came full circle through my work in a Chiropractic practice soon after I graduated  from Florida State College of Jacksonville in 2014. I hit the ground running and have not stopped.

With a desire to continually learn and grow in massage techniques and modalities, my goal is to add Yoga Teacher Certification to my list of accomplishments.

Danielle’s Favorite Quote:
He who works with his hands is a laborer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.

Molly Gaines

Molly, a Fernandina Beach native and resident for most of her life, became a Licensed Massage Therapist in 2004.

After teaching elementary education for almost a decade, I diversified and became “another kind of teacher.” This time with my hands, my heart, and my caregiving skills all rolled into one career!

My newly acquired career passion was born through my own recovery from injuries after a car accident. I improved significantly through massage therapy and I knew that I wanted to help others as I had been helped. Massage therapy changed my life and I knew this was my dream job and my destiny.

I have worked with chiropractic physicians and am certified in medical  massage as well as deep tissue and sports massage modalities. My most recent full-time employment at the AIP Omni Spa was very enjoyable and professionally rewarding.

Meanwhile I am enjoying a return to private practice and joining the team at Amelia Massage Associates.

*Note From Management

*Molly is a seasoned, diversified practitioner with many massage modalities under her belt. We are proud of the additional certification Molly has achieved as a Lymphedema Therapist. This certification includes (CDT) Complete Decongestive Therapy and (MLD) Manual Lymph Drainage.

Molly is a perfect fit for massage therapy because she understands the balance and benefits of massage therapy, whether for a client’s simple indulgence or for medically-based therapeutic bodywork and rehabilitation.

Susan Caples

Originally from Philadelphia, I have enjoyed living in our little piece of paradise, Amelia Island, for 37 years. I have felt like a natural born healer my entire life which makes sense of my steady progression in serving family, friends, our community, and visitors to the island. With a background that includes Physical Education, Health, Recreation, and the Hospitality industries, enrolling in Massage Therapy School at Florida State College of Jacksonville was an easy and natural decision. It was a very positive experience and I am thankful for the critical knowledge and experience that I gained.

Blending massage techniques with my knowledge of Reiki, meditation, and breath work has created a diversified pathway to benefit our massage therapy clients while encouraging personal and professional growth for me. Having always had a desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of people whom I’ve encountered all along the way, I spent many years researching the interconnecting body-mind-spirit complex. I have discovered first-hand that massage therapy brings relief from physical pain by targeting specific problem areas. Deep Tissue Massage and Sports Massage, two of my favorite modalities, use techniques that will make a big difference in how your body moves and performs. Being a high energy therapist who enjoys helping clients to meet their goals, it has been rewarding to see and feel the positive results.

My philosophy is that in working together, you can become liberated from restrictions and constraints that result from poor postural habits, emotional stress, injury, muscular imbalance, and other factors. I strive to support the healing process and return your mental, physical, emotional, and energetic body back to the original aligned state of ease and free movement so that you can be more present in your life. With a mindful purpose, together we can facilitate your restoration to balance and well-being in an atmosphere that promotes enlightenment, peace, joy, and serenity.
